A brilliant story from the life of Rahim and Tulsidas
Dearest Darling Friends,
Rahim used to write poetry dedicated to Krishna. Tulsidas came to know about a unique behavior of Rahim. While giving alms to the poor, Rahim gave with extreme humility. While giving, he kept his gaze downwards towards the earth. He never looked at the person he was giving alms to. Tulsidas promptly wrote the following couplet and sent it to Rahim.
“ ऐसी देनी देंन ज्यूँ , कित सीखे हो सैन
ज्यों ज्यों कर ऊंच्यो करो , त्यों त्यों निचे नैन ”
“O great person, where have you learn this amazing way of giving?
As your hands rise (to give), your eyes look down.”
Completing the couplet which Tulsidas wrote, Rahim replied in extreme humility. His reply shows how evolved Rahim was as a soul.
“ देनहार कोई और है , भेजत जो दिन रैन
लोग भरम हमपर करे , तासो निचे नैन ”
“The Giver is someone else (the God almighty), giving day and night.
The world has a misconception that I am the giver. So, I lower my eyes in embarrassment.”
This exchange of couplets reminds me about the three possible ways of living life.
Devil – Someone who has no desire to give back but has an unquenchable desire to accumulate. They have no qualms to harm others if it benefits them. They destroy a society.
Human – Someone who believes, if someone benefits out of me, I have no issues. However, I wish for appreciation and validation when I give. They also believe, if I get something in return, I do not mind giving. There is subtle ego attached to ‘giving’. I guess, this is who most of us are. They sustain a society.
Saint – Someone who gives with humility, with a heart filled with gratitude. They have no ego about ‘giving’. They feel overwhelmed when they give. They wonder why they have been chosen and blessed with much abundance. That is what Rahim was all about.
This story has touched me deeply and made me aware of the shallow ego I have. I wonder, what does it take to be a Rahim? How does someone become a Rahim? Any suggestions?
With love, prayers and exceptional wishes,
Imagine, when we wake up, we are given only what we had thanked for.
