Haven’t you heard of ‘Mon Jai’ yet?
Dearest Darling Friends,
Running, for her, is second nature.
She ran, in a big fit of rage, when in Class III, a Tata Sumo filled with village kids was “too full” to accommodate her on a ride to school.
She ran again, this time from her angry mom, when she reached home ….. hair tousled and knees bruised from the falls during her Sumo chase.
And continued running ever since with steely determination in tracks across Assam ….. in coaching camps in Patiala and Sonepat, or in the rare races where she performed so poorly that she wanted to give up running.
Today – ‘mon jai’ (‘I feel like’) is a hashtag she generously uses in her social media posts.
But if you delve deeper, it’s so much more.
It’s a song by her most-adored singer Zubeen Garg.
It’s her unfailing determination in her weakest moments.
It’s her voracious appetite for winning against odds.
It’s her way of describing anything she holds dear — a pet rabbit, a picture of her parents, or a WhatsApp group with her gang of seven.
Perhaps a telling leitmotif of an incredible five golds in 18 days …..
Hima Das — world champ in the wings.
